Medication Management at Student Health
The providers at Student Health are here to help manage medications while students are attending Drexel University. To begin medication or obtain medication refills at Student Health an appointment will be required. We will not refill medication if you have not established care with our office or established care, but we have never prescribed the medication for you. The providers have the right to decline prescribing a medication and will recommend other options for obtaining medication if needed.
Routine Medications
Any medication prescribed by your primary care provider can usually be prescribed and/or managed by Drexel Student Health. As with starting care at any office, please bring prescription information or medication list including dosage and directions. Common medication concerns we manage include but not limited to:- Blood pressure
- Thyroid
- Depression/anxiety
- Cholesterol
- Acne
- Vitamin deficiency
- Controlled diabetes
- Asthma
Birth Control
Medication for birth control can be started and refilled at Drexel Student Health. Not sure what type is right for you? The providers will review all options to determine which method will fit you and your lifestyle. We support all methods of birth control including:
- Pill
- Patch
- Ring
- IUD insertion and removal- hormonal or non-hormonal options
- Nexplanon arm implant and removal
Below are medications we commonly get asked about the most. Please note each student's medication and care is handled individually depending on need and other factors. Once again, the providers have the right to decline prescribing a medication and will recommend other options for obtaining medication.
Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADD/ADHD)
If a student is taking medication for attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADD/ADHD), or, we are happy to continue the medication that is currently prescribed, but we require documentation of the formal diagnosis (the neuropsychological testing that was done) and documentation of the current dose of the prescription, and when it was last filled. Students will also need to sign a controlled substance agreement with the provider. Since these medications are highly desirable and readily diverted, we do not start new prescriptions or change dosages. Please advise your student to have a safe, secure place to store these medications because we are not able to replace lost or stolen controlled substances due to DEA (Drug Enforcement Agency) guidelines. It is a felony offense to sell or give one's stimulants to another person. We will provide only a 30-day supply at a time and the student. Students will discuss with their provider how often they need to be seen to obtain refills. Lost or stolen medication will not be replaced
PrEP and PEP pre and post exposure prophylaxis
Providers will start and continue PrEP medications. Lab work and visits are required routinely. PEP will be prescribed when needed and requires an office visit.
Hormone Replacement Therapy
The providers at Drexel Student Health will not start hormone replacement therapy but will continue medication that has already been started when supporting documentation is provided.
If you are interested in starting hormone replacement therapy or gender affirming care, The Mazzoni Center in Philadelphia is a great option to explore your options.
Biologic Medications for Autoimmune Conditions
These cannot be prescribed in most cases by primary care physicians. We are happy to provide a referral to a local specialist that can continue prescribing.
Pain Medication Controlled Substance
Controlled substance medication for pain is not prescribed. In the event you need continuation of this type of medication you will be referred to a Pain Management specialist.
