Dear Members of the Drexel Community,

Since our joyous Commencement ceremony earlier this month, and as my time as your interim president draws to a close, I have been reflecting on the remarkable journey we have shared this past year. It has been a time of bold transformation for Drexel, and the collaboration and support I have witnessed is truly second to none.

From the outset, our shared priorities were clear: to ensure a smooth presidential search and transition, advance our plans for Academic Transformation and financial resilience, and realize a successful Salus University integration, all while delivering the exceptional Drexel experience our students have been promised.

As a team, rowing in the same direction, our campus has become more vibrant and welcoming, as we opened new green spaces and completed key construction projects. Our fundraising efforts flourished, with Drexel Giving Day alone raising $1.7 million, a testament to the unwavering support of our alumni and friends, and a direct investment in our students’ futures through scholarships.

Our students shined, garnering experience in the classroom and in the field, whether through co-ops, internships or study abroad. In partnership with our outstanding faculty, students made their mark on campus, in our city and in our world through academic pursuits and research — making it back in time to score game-winning goals or star in theater productions. I will always be amazed by Drexel students’ grit, perseverance and creativity.

I am thrilled for Antonio Merlo, who will begin his tenure as Drexel’s 16th president on July 1. A renowned scholar and higher education leader, he brings a powerful and energizing vision for innovation and collaboration to our storied institution, and is well-prepared to build on the momentum we have created, especially in advancing Academic Transformation.

As a proud alumnus and trustee committed to seeing this University succeed, I can say with confidence: With Academic Transformation, we are absolutely moving in the right direction. Through the integration of colleges and schools, curriculum redesign and the transition to a semester calendar, we are enhancing our academic structure and aligning it with our mission to deliver an experiential education like never before, as well as drive societal impact. I am especially thankful to the deans, faculty and professional staff who have led this work with such dedication.

I also recognize the many teams who have worked tirelessly to ensure a seamless merger with Salus University. As we await final approval from the U.S. Department of Education, we look forward to fully uniting our institutions and expanding our leadership in health sciences education, research and clinical practice.

I never imagined 40 years ago while studying at LeBow College of Business that I would one day serve as Drexel’s president. It has been the honor of a lifetime. Drexel is more than a university — it is a family. I will always be proud to be a Dragon.

With my deepest appreciation, I thank you for the opportunity to serve as your president, and I thank you for your invaluable contributions to support the success of our beloved University.

Sincerely,

Denis P. O’Brien
Interim President
